Let’s talk about that. Do you have writer’s block? Do you struggle with procrastination when it comes to your writing all the time? Do you often feel worried or doubtful about your writing with every click of the keyboard? If so, you are in the right place. My name is Cheryl Reynolds and I help fiction writers become authors. Here at Finish Your Fiction Podcast. I will share easy ways for you to move beyond writer’s block, smash those self-sabotaging behaviors and finally stop procrastinating. It’s time for you to cultivate the writer’s mindset and finish your fiction book now.
Let’s get started. Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast. So this is what is called writer’s block, and it has been known to destroy writer’s dreams since 1900s. You’ve lost your flow, you’ve lost your mojo, you’ve lost your muse.
Now some people say this is a little controversial and I’m going to be controversial. Some people say writer’s block does not exist, and I am one of those people. However, that is for another podcast and for the sake of this story, let’s discuss how and why writer’s block happens.
So writer’s block is when you are unable to proceed with your writing, when you are completely stuck, and it can happen in spurts. You know, one day you can have writer’s block and the next day you’re fine. Some people can have this inability to write for months or for years or, unfortunately, in some cases, they just never go back to writing. But most often you can get beyond this writer’s block. Most often it’s kind of like a glitch in the computer where you just need to have a little bit of a reboot and then you’re off and running again.
But I want to talk about the few reasons on why you may have writer’s block, the reason it is happening. So I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the reasons for writer’s block can be endless. It c an be a lack of creativity, a lack of focus, you could be tired, maybe you’re sick. Sometimes your story is stuck. Sometimes it is a form of procrastination. Sometimes it serves another purpose, where there is a secondary gain for having writer’s block. We’ll get into that in another podcast episode.
Most often, when you figure out why you’re having writer’s block, the block will dissolve and you’ll be able to move past it. The main reason why you’re having writer’s block is writer’s block is a symptom of something else. It’s the idea of going to the doctor and saying hey, doc, i have an itch. Okay, where’s your itch? It’s on my elbow. Okay, that is the symptom of a problem. The doctor looks at your arm and realizes that you have psoriasis. That is the illness. The same thing with writer’s block.
Writer’s block is the symptom, the illness. I don’t want to call it an illness when it comes to writing, but the situation is something different. And when you can figure out the reason behind your writer’s block, then you will be able to move beyond it. So you’re probably wondering okay, great, good information, but how do I know or figure out what is behind my writer’s block?
My suggestion is to close the computer, take some time and just sit with it. When you go back to your computer and you have that same quote, unquote, writer’s block again, just dial down into your body, connect with yourself, get out of your thinking mind, get into the emotions and the thoughts that are coming up when you’re sitting there. And a lot of times it can be something simple like this is hard, i can’t do this, i’m stuck. You know, you just may feel as though you’re getting a little anxious or getting a little fearful about a part in your book, or maybe your feeling is though I’m just not good enough for this But whatever you’re feeling, or that is what is coming up, write that down. Take note of it. When you go back to your right is when you go back to writing again. If that feeling comes back up again, is it the same kind of feeling? Does it bring up? the same emotions, the same sensations Dial into that? That will give you an understanding of what’s going on a deeper level because my belief is and again I will do a whole podcast episode of why I do not believe writer’s block exists. But my whole belief is that writer’s block is just a symptom of an underlying issue, and that is what you need to figure out. On that note, you take care and I will see you on the next episode.
